September 18th, 2012

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012.

Today we decided to go for a hike and do some geocaching.  We are headed towards Pu'u Wa'awa'a which has a 3+ mile trail that climbs 1800 feet to the top.  It looks like a clear day so the view from the top should be amazing!

We start out on one trail to get a geocache...there are houses up behind that wall.

The hunter's check-in station...the hiker's check-in was down the road from here but this is where we parked...and saw the hazadrous cliff sign again.

Jason at the Ohia Trail...and wildlife sighting!

That is where we are headed...

We met a really nice lady with two dogs on the trail...there is Jason ahead of me...the bench was looking like a good place to rest...but I can rest at the top!

So much for the clear sky that would give us great views...

I need to invest in a pair of shoes that keep out the dirt and grime....and it was COLD up top...the thermometer registered 58 degrees.

A herd of goats...and I'm not sure but I think that one is a male :)

The views from the trail are getting better...

Turkeys and Goats by the gate

We grabbed some geocaches on the way back thru...

Then visited Pu'ukohola Heiau.  We had our lunch of Poke in the parking lot.

King Kamehemeha built this heiau (temple) in 1790-1791 and dedicated it to his war god.  Volunteers formed a human chain and brought in boulders from miles away.  If they dropped one, it stayed on the ground so it wouldn't disrupt the chain.  This was built so that King Kamehemeha could conquer Hawai'i. The straight walls amazed me especially since they didn't use mortar!

Some pretty yellow birds...and some quail-like birds

This beach actually had a Shark Heiau just offshore where human remains were offered to the sharks...it has been buried for decades but apparently the sharks still visit.

We then headed down to 'Anaeho'omalu Bay...or A Bay for short :)  It is near Lava Lava Beach Club and the cottages looked really neat!  We looked into them but they do not have kitchens and that was one must-have for us.  We were going to stop for a drink after we were done but it started to rain so everyone was inside and it was packed.

While walking the beach, I saw this 'rock' and quickly realized it was a turtle!!  I was so shocked to see one on the beach like that...I backed away from it when I almost stepped on another 'rock'

Then there were more down by Jason!  Very cool for a girl who loves turtles!!

We were walking the beach to a geocache...called The Lone Palm.  This was the 'trail'

With a bench that was just a piece of wood propped up on some rocks

That would be the Lone Palm...along with a freshwater pool that we had to ourselves...

So of course, we had to go for a swim...it was nice to cool off after the hike and the hot day!

On the way back, we found Lori's graffiti...and some more petroglyphs on the beach.

Dinner--looks like pork, couscous with carrots & onions and a side of broccoli!

Who needs a stinking guidebook when Geocaching takes you to places like this!
